How to Improve Young Areca Nut Grade C Quality

How to Improve Young Areca Nut Grade C Quality

Agro Bumi Sumatera – Areca nut from Indonesia is one of the flagship agricultural products in high demand across international industries, and young areca nut grade C is the category that most often keeps a good harvest out of the export chain.

Global market demand, especially from countries in South Asia and the Middle East, keeps climbing, which makes areca nut a promising export opportunity.

As an international areca nut supplier, PT. Agro Bumi Sumatera is committed to meeting that demand by protecting both supply and product quality.

To make sure what we export is the best available, we open collaboration with farmers through a transparent grading system.

When we receive areca nut from partner farmers, we run a strict selection. We apply three grading levels for areca nut: A, B and C.

Grade A areca nut is accepted automatically because the specification is complete, while Grade B is still considered case by case.

There is, however, one category we call Grade C areca nut: nuts whose specification does not qualify for the international market.

This article looks further at the criteria for Grade C areca nut and, more importantly, offers practical solutions for farmers to lift the quality of their harvest so that their agricultural products can compete globally.

Grade C Areca Nut: Criteria and Reasons for Rejection

Criteria

Grade C areca nut often has a brownish or blackened outer skin, indicating that the fruit is overripe or has suffered damage. The skin feels limp and wrinkled rather than fresh and firm.

In terms of size, the diameter is small and uneven, far from the standard the market requires.

When held, this nut feels dry and light, showing very low moisture content, unlike young areca nut which ideally holds high moisture.

Beyond appearance, Grade C areca nut can also be recognised by a fishy, rotten smell. This aroma is a strong indication of internal decay.

Physical damage is another factor: the skin is broken or scratched on more than 15% of the surface. Mould or insects are also often visible and already spreading across the fruit.

Reasons for Rejection

All of the criteria above mean the nut does not meet the very strict international standard.

The main reason for rejection is that such areca nut cannot be sold on the international market.

Poor quality can trigger contamination and further damage during the shipping process.

It also risks damaging the reputation of Indonesian areca nut as the world’s largest exporter of the commodity, and of course it costs farmers themselves, because the product simply does not sell.

How to Improve Areca Nut Quality for the Export Market

If your areca nut falls into the Grade C category, that does not mean there is no hope.

There are several concrete steps you can take to improve the quality of your areca nut, starting from the pre-harvest stage through to post-harvest handling.

Pre-Harvest

  • Choose Superior Seedlings: select areca nut seedlings from superior varieties proven to produce high-quality fruit. Good seedlings are the foundation of a successful harvest.
  • Optimal Plant Care: fertilise regularly and pay extra attention to pest and disease control. Healthy plants produce healthy fruit.

Post-Harvest

  • Correct Harvest Timing: harvest the areca nut while it is still young, when the skin is bright green and firm. Avoid harvesting nuts that are already overripe or fully mature, because this affects moisture content and texture.
  • Proper Harvest Technique: use clean, sharp tools to pick the fruit. Avoid dropping fruit from a height, as this causes bruising or internal damage that cannot be seen from the outside.
  • Early Field Sorting: after harvesting, sort immediately to separate nuts that are damaged, mouldy or rotten. This helps preserve the quality of the areca nut that is still saleable.

Storage and Shipping

  • Good Cleaning and Packaging: wash the areca nut until it is free of soil and dirt. Then pack it in perforated containers so that air circulation is maintained.
  • Cool, Dry Storage: keep packed areca nut in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. This helps preserve freshness.
  • Fast and Efficient Shipping: the sooner the areca nut reaches the collection point, the better. Send your harvest as soon as possible after picking to minimise the risk of damage in transit.
